Hindu Educational Society established the school under the name “Pillyar Padasalai” and by the grace of Shri Pillayar the school has outlived the expectations of the founders – in fact, branching into – one, Hindu College, Colombo, and the other – Colombo Hindu College at Ratmalana.

Classes for Senior School Certificate (S.S.C.)  commenced.

02.05.1953

Sir John Kotalawala (then Prime Minister of Ceylon) laid foundation for Colombo Hindu college at Ratmalana.

01.01.1955

All Post – Primary schools at Pillayar Padasalai were transferred to Colombo Hindu college at Ratmalana.

01.01.1957

Mr.N.Satyendra (Barrister - at - Law) was appointed the principal.

1958

Communal riots. The school suffered the first set – back.

01.01.1959

Mr.T.Subramaniam assumed duties as the principal.

15.04.1962

The school was vested in the government. Mr.S.Ambalavanar was appointed the principal.

03.03.1966

Mr.T.Neethirajah (then senator) laid foundation for the third three – storied building.

01.01.1967

Mr.P.Nalliah was appointed the principal. 6^th standard classes re – commenced at Bambalapitiya and the school started to function separately from Colombo Hindu college, Ratmalana. This school was named “Hindu Junior School, Bambalapitiya”.

Hon. minister of education, I.M.R.A. Iriyagolle, M.P.declared open the first three – storeyed building.

First prize giving of Hindu junior school. Hon. Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake, M.P. graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Mr.P.Nilliah retired as the principal.

Mr.V.Shanmugarajah was appointed the acting principal.

Mr.T.Sangaralingam was appointed the principal.

Hon. minister of ports and telecommunication, C.Kumarasuriyar, M.P. laid the foundation for the second three- storeyed building.

Hon. Minister of education Badiuddin Mahmud, M.P. declared the second three – storyed building.

Parent – teacher association laid the foundation for the third three – storeyed building.

G.C.E. (A/L) classes were started. The school was elevated as the Hindu College, Colombo.

Silver jubilee celebrations hon. prime Minister Sirimavo Bandranaiake, M.P. declared open the third three – storeyed block (silver jubilee block).

Hon. minister education, Nissanka Wijeyaratne, M.P. laid foundation for the fourth three – storeyed building.

His Excellency president, J.R.Jayawardene declared open the fourth three – storeyed building.

Mr.K.Gunaratnam laid the foundation for the administration block

Mr.Anura Bastian, M.P.for Colombo south laid foundation for the fifth three – storyed building.

Principal and parent – teachers association laid foundation for prayer hall block.

Mr.T.Sangralingam (principal) received possession of the land for construction of Colombo Ramanathan Hindu Ladies’ College.

Messrs C.Ranganathan, Q.C. D.M.Swaminathan and T.Sangaralingam laid foundation for building for colombo ramanathan Hindu Ladies’ College.

Hon. prime minister R.Premadasa, M.P. declared open the administration block.

25.06.1982

His Excellency Precedent J.R.Jayewardene opened a building at this school and also opened Colombo Ramanathan Hindu Ladies’ College (later he was accorded a reception at Saraswathie hall).

11.07.1983

Prayer hall block was ceremonially declared open.

Communal riots. School was closed for several months as it was used as a refuee camp.

13.10.1983

Classes up to 8^th standard were started at Bambalapitiya R.C.T.M. school under the supervision of Mrs.P.Thurairajah. 9^th standard and classes above were started at Isipathana M.V. under the supervision of Mrs.K.K.Kankeyan.

Mr.T.Sangaralingam (principal) went abort on leave and Mrs.S.Patkunam (deputy principal) acted for him. Mr.Sangaralingam did not return but retired.

15.01.1986

Mr.D.R.Rajalingam assumed duties as the new principal.

OBA was inaugurated.

Mr.R.Arudsothynathan laid foundation for a new school café.

01.11.1987

Hon. minister for regional development and Hindu religious affairs, C.rajadurai, M.P. declared open the sports pavilion. Foundation laid for construction of a kovil at the school.

Commencement of Kiriya Kumbabishekham.

Mr.D.R.Rajalingam was transferred to the Examinations Department. Mrs.V.Sundaramoorthy (Vice Principal) functioned as the acting Principal.

Mr.S.Sri Rajasingam was appointed the new principal.

Hon. Minister of State for Education - Mrs.R.M.Pulendran laid foundation for Pulendran Block

40th Anniversary Celebrations commenced with 40 well wishers lighting 40 traditional oil lamps and pooja at the Kovil.

Hon. Minister of State for Education - Mrs.R.M.Pulendran declared open the Pulendran Block.

Mr.S.Sri Rajasingam (Principal) was transferred. Mr.B.S.Sarma was appointed the new principal.

The School was declared the National School (First Tamil National School outside the North-East Province).

Fortieth Anniversary Prize Giving - His Excellency President R.Premadsa   graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Hon Mrs.R.M.Pulendran was the Guest of Honor.

Hon. Minister of State for Education - Mrs.R.M.Pulendran declared open the President’s Block.

Mr.B.S.Sarma (Principal) was transferred to Ministry of Education and Mrs.P.Easwaralingam commenced performing the duties of the Principal.

Hindu College (Colombo) Development Trust was established at a Dinner at Saraswathie Hall. Dr.J.E.Eapen provided improved Toilets at his expense.

Hindu College (Colombo) Development Trust was incorporated by the Minister of Justice under sec. 114 of the Trusts Ordinance in the Government Gazette No. 1103/7 dated 26th October 1999

Botanical Garden was opened by Mr.S.Thillainadarajah, Addl. Secretary to the Ministry of Education. 

09.05.2000

A school van was acquired due to the initiatives of the Teachers’ Guild by the SDS.

Hon. Minister of Transport and Highways A.H.M. Fowzie, M.P. declared open a new three-storeyed building constructed next to pavilion.

Cultural bond with Goddess Shri Saraswathi surrounded by for Great Tamil Poets (Valluwar, Ilango, Kambar and Bharathi) near the kovil was declared open by Prof. K. Pathmanathan, Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

Golden Jubilee Celebrations commenced. Fifty traditional oil lamps were lit and fifty school flags were hoisted by well wishers of the school.

Golden Jubilee Exhibition commenced and continued for three days. Hon. Minister of Education, Susil Premajayanth, M.P. declared it open.

Sound System connecting all the classes was established. Multi Media Projector was purchased for the College by Hindu College (Colombo) Development Trust.

Indoor Sports Stadium was opened.
